NEIGHBORHOOD FORUM TO PROMOTE CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING FEB. 23

 HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

Milford-Area Neighbor to Neighbor first met in January, 2002 as a one-time conversation on racism, spurred by the April, 2001 riots in downtown Cincinnati.

That conversation has extended over two years and includes a core group of 20 neighbors from Milford, Miami Township and Camp Dennison. We're black and white, males and females, professionals, retirees and stay-at-home parents. Our backgrounds may be dissimilar, but we share the common goal of bridging the racial gap in our community and we hold hope that others may follow our example.

 MISSION STATEMENT

Together, we crafted this mission statement:

To understand and respect life experiences and cultures different from our own, then help others understand by speaking against injustice and becoming an example of love and compassion for all.

 CORE BELIEFS

Since the very first conversation, we hold these core beliefs:

• Be an example by showing unity while respecting individual differences and opinions;

• The real source of racial tension is economic;

• Educate children, who are color-blind until taught otherwise; and

• Ease the problem by starting with ourselves and our community.

 REGULAR MEETINGS

We are shifting our meetings to the first Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at Milford First United Methodist Church, in the lower level, for Dec. 1 and Jan. 5. Programs range from candid discussion to viewing pertinent documentaries, hosting speakers, potlucks and organizing ourselves into a viable community force. We annually walk in the Milford Frontier Days Parade and often attend events together or in smaller groups.

If this appeals to you, please join us any first Monday for friendship and honest conversation on racial issues.

 PHILOSOPHY

Neighbor to Neighbor

We are your neighbors here in Milford who have joined together to share our feelings, talk about the attitudes and issues we all have, and make new friends.

We have met since monthly since January, 2002 The group has grown. We have talked honestly, laughed some, cried some, and learned much. We are not trying to change the world, just ourselves.

Things divide people in this world: skin color, language, nationality, money, education, and many more. We could all learn a lot from a box of crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box. We have to live with each other in this world.
